Autism
Autism, better known as autism spectrum disorder (ASD), is a complex developmental condition involving persistent challenges in social interaction, restricted or repetitive behaviours, speech and nonverbal communication. The National Autism Spectrum Disorder Surveillance System (NASS) reports that, in Canada, 1 in 66 children and youth between the ages of 5 and 17 has ASD.
The effects of ASD and the severity of symptoms are different in each person. Many subtypes exist that are influenced by a combination of genetic and environmental factors, but they are often accompanied by sensory sensitivities, gastrointestinal disorders, seizures or sleep disorders. People with autism may also have mental health challenges such as anxiety and depression. However, each person with autism has their own set of strengths and challenges.
Research On NeurOptimal For Autism
NeurOptimal is not a treatment for autism, but research indicates its efficacy at helping regulate some behavioural characteristics. One study, “Improving Emotional Regulation Using NeurOptimal® Training for ASD Youth,” strongly suggests that the use of NeurOptimal lessens symptoms related to emotional regulation for individuals with autism. A larger study with more controls is needed.
